Dietetics is the science of how food and nutrition affect human health. The field of dietetics has a strong emphasis on public health and about the importance of making proper dietary choices as it relates to preparing patients for intensive treatment and supportive recovery. With regards to rehabilitation and management of persons with neurological deficits, the concept is applied by dieticians in developing individual nutritional therapies and advice to address health issues and co-morbid conditions for neurologically ill patients at each stage of their rehabilitation journey. This includes support for patients who require weight loss advice, nutrition support and those with artificial feeding tubes. This activity is often implemented closely with other multidisciplinary teams to support good nutrition for neurologically-ill patients. Dietitians individualise patient’s nutritional assessments and monitor their progress throughout their stay to ensure their nutritional needs are provided for.
